Box Score For the second straight game the Waterloo women's hockey team would need extra time but would come out on the losing end as the Western Mustangs topped the Warriors 3-2 in overtime on Sunday afternoon at the CIF arena.
Michelle Saunders ripped a screen shot that got through Waterloo keeper
Rebecca Bouwhuis (Orillia/) three minutes into the extra frame to give Western their second straight win. With the loss Waterloo finish their home opening weekend with three out of a possible four points.
The Warriors would once again get off to a slow start as Western put home the first goal when Megan Taylor tipped in her first of the season. The puck took a funny bounce off the stick of Taylor and it would go up and over a helpless Bouwhuis. Brianna Iazzolino and Ally Golloway earned helpers on the goal.
The score would remain 1-0 in favour of the road team before Waterloo found the equalizer as
Lindsey Ceaser (Owen Sound/) corralled a nice pass from
Marissa Redmond (Ajax/) and put it home on the blocker side past Kelly Campbell.
Western would waste little time jumping out front again as Galloway jumped on a loose puck and slid it past Bouwhuis only 16 seconds after the Warrior goal.
Down 2-1 starting the final frame, Waterloo would once again require a comeback and it would be
Carolyn Burke (Mississauga/) for the second straight game to provide the spark. The second year winger picked off a rink wide pass and went down all alone on Campbell. Burke slid the puck to her backhand and as she fell to the ice batted it back towards Campbell's glove hand to tie the game up 2-all. Bouwhuis would make several game saving stops down the stretch and Waterloo would head to overtime for a second straight game.
Unfortunately for the home side, the Mustangs' would find the game winner as Saunders put a screened shot past Bouwhuis.
The Warriors will play their third straight home game next weekend when they host the Laurier Golden Hawks at 2pm, live on Warriors TV.
