Box Score The Laurier Golden Hawks came into the CIF arena and blanked the Waterloo Warriors 3-0 on Saturday afternoon to improve to 2-1-0 on the season. With the loss the Warriors dropped to 1-1-1.
Amanda Smith was solid between the pipes for the visiting Hawks turning aside all 20 shots faced while Waterloo goalie
Rebecca Bouwhuis (Orillia/) was the busier of the two allowing three goals on 32 shots.
The opening frame saw both teams exchange chances with the best coming off the stick of
Carolyn Burke (Mississauga/) looking for her third goal of the young season.
Rachel Marriott (Waterloo/) fed a nice pass over to Burke on a 2-on-1 but she fired the puck just wide on the short side.
Laurier turned up the pressure in the second frame and would find the game's opening marker as Heather Platt would bang home a rebound at 6:21 for her first of the season.
The Hawks extended their lead seven minutes later as Devon Skeats wired a shot from the slot that went over the glove hand of Bouwhuis putting Laurier up 2-0.
The Warriors would tilt the ice back in their favour with several quality chances on back-to-back powerplay's but the quick glove of Smith would stymie the Warriors on several occasions keeping it at 2-goal advantage for her team into the second intermission.
Waterloo found their opportunity to cut into Laurier's lead early in the third period as Haley Baxter took a body checking penalty for the Hawks but Waterloo could not solve Smith on the powerplay. From there the Hawks defence would prevent any further quality chances and add one more goal off the stick of Jessica Prevette to secure the 3-0 victory.
The Warriors will enjoy the rest of Thanksgiving weekend off before playing their first road game of the season next Friday in Oshawa against the UOIT Ridgebacks. Puck drop is set for 7:30pm.
