The Waterloo Warriors started 2013 with a new point guard and a quick 17-6 run. But the lead was short-lived and in the end the visiting Lakehead Thunderwolves defeated the Warriors 93-59 on Friday night.
Jaspreet Gill (Oliver/) joined the Warriors, sitting out last season after a season with the UBC Thunderbirds in Canada West. In his first appearance he led the Warriors in scoring with 15 points.
Wayne Bridge (North York/Eastern Commerce) added 14 points and 10 rebounds.
After the Warriors quick start, Lakehead responded with a 19-0 run, tying the score at the first quarter mark and taking the lead early in the second. A second 19-0 run to start the fourth quarter gave Lakehead more than enough firepower to finish off the Warriors.
Waterloo was down just 8 at half time, but shot only 18.5% in the second half and were out-rebounded 26-13.
Lakehead had five players in double figures, led by Joseph Jones with 16 points. Ryan Thompson, Joe Hart, Yoosrie Salhia and Matthew Schmidt were the others to score more than 10 points each. Lakehead was also proficient from long range, hitting 13 of 30 from the three point
line.
With the win the Thunderwolves improve to 4-4 on the season while Waterloo drops to 0-8.
The two teams meet again Saturday night. Game time is 8:00pm at the PAC. For those unable to attend, the game will be broadcast on
SSN Canada.
