Warriors pick up second straight shutout victory

Marissa Redmond streaks down the ice in Waterloo's 2-0 win. Redmond scored the insurance marker in the 3rd.
Box Score It only took 29 seconds of hockey for the Waterloo women's hockey team to pick up a crucial two points in the OUA standings as the Warriors shut out the Lions 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at the CIF Arena.

Kelly Toms (Ennismore/) and Marissa Redmond (Ajax/) scored 29 seconds apart while Rebecca Bouwhuis (Orillia/) was steady in net as the Warriors picked up their eighth win of the season and their second straight 2-0 win.  The black and gold are now 8-11-3 on the season and move four points ahead of the York Lions (6-13-3) for the eighth and final playoff spot and are just one point back of seventh.

The Warriors outshot the Lions 20-16 through two periods of play but they could not solve Megan Lee (Orillia, Ont.) who looked unbeatable in the early going.  The same can be said for Bouwhuis who made several key saves throughout the opening two frames to keep the game locked at zeros.

The Warriors came out firing in the final period and would be rewarded at the 3:09 minute mark as Toms broke away and found herself one-on-one with Lee and made no mistake with her third goal of the season.  29 seconds late the Warriors added an insurance marker as Redmond batted home a loose puck after some gritty work by Jessica Tracey (Woodslee/) and Sarah Wolfe (Waterloo/), who each picked up an assist on the goal.

Bouwhuis and the steady Warrior blue line did the rest shutting down the York offense to secure the 2-0 victory and an all-important four point weekend.

The Warriors return to the CIF next weekend for a pair of home games against Western on Saturday and Brock on Sunday.  Both games are at 2pm and can be seen live on the Streaming Sports Network (SSN Canada).
