Benny-Hill: Captain Kirt, Behenna lead Warriors to victory

Justin Larson's two-point effort put him into a tie for first in the CIS scoring race.
Box Score For a team mired in a scoring drought, one six-goal game can be considered nothing more than a fluke. But to pot six goals twice in a span of three games could be a sign of better things to come.

At least, the Waterloo Warriors sure hope that's the case.

Captain Kirt Hill (Winnipeg/) extended his goal-scoring streak to 5 games, and Colin Behenna (Waterloo/) notched a goal and three assists in a 6-4 win over the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex on Friday night.

The win moves Waterloo to 11-8-4 and pushes them into a tie for 5th in the OUA West division with the York Lions. It also gives the Warriors a little breathing room over the 7th place Hawks, who now fall 4 points behind their rivals with 5 games remaining.

Justin Larson (Buckhorn/) had a goal and assist in the victory, and veteran Greg Steffes (Amherstburg/), who's long filled the super-utility role for the Warriors, also scored his long-awaited first career CIS goal in this, his 71st regular-season game.

For the Hawks, defenceman Derek Holden recorded four points in the loss. The Warriors were also able to chase reigning CIS male athlete of the week Ryan Daniels from the Laurier net, as Daniels made 18 saves on 23 shots before being replaced by Duncan Long in the third period. Warriors keeper Keaton Hartigan (Kitchener/) made 29 saves for the win.

The Warriors controlled play from the drop of the puck, and Larson opened the scoring in highlight fashion when he deeked Daniels to put the Warriors up 1-0. After Laurier's Greg Cirilli answered back for the hosts, Hill restored the Warrior advantage with a power play marker just before the 14-minute mark, as Waterloo ended the period up 2-1.

While the shot clock evened out throughout the second period, the Warriors continued to dominate on the scoreboard. Hill got his second of the game on the doorstep to make it 3-1 Waterloo, before the Hawks once again drew to within one when Matthew Provost beat Hartigan. However, the late-period power play struck again for the Warriors when Behenna's shot changed directions and found the back of the net, making the score 4-2 after 40 minutes.

The see-saw battle was effectively tipped the Waterloo way early in the third when Steffes' shot found a path through traffic for the eventual game-winner. It was also the goal that chased Daniels, who's played in all but one of Laurier's 23 games this season. Kain Allicock (Markham/) put the game out of reach when he scored to make it 6-2, before the Hawks' Holden and Brent Vandenberg added a couple late goals to round out the scoring.

The Warriors will now look to continue their high-scoring ways when they travel to Oshawa to take on the UOIT Ridgebacks tomorrow night. Puck drop is slated for 7:30pm.

Notes: The Warriors went 2-for-7 on the man advantage, while the Hawks went 2-for-5…Larson's two points pulls him back into a 6-way tie for first in the CIS scoring race…Hill now has 7 goals during his 5-game goal-scoring streak.
