Box Score Earlier in the week, Waterloo Warriors men's hockey coach
Brian Bourque talked of how the OUA has become a league of one-goal games. And lately, it seems like the Warriors just can't get that one extra goal.
The Guelph Gryphons scored three straight goals in the first half of the game, and the Warriors came up short in their seventh straight one-goal contest, as the Gryphons topped Waterloo 3-2 in Guelph's annual Frosty Mug winter homecoming game Friday night at the Sleeman Center.
A boisterous crowd of over 2300 funneled into the home of the OHL's Guelph Storm to watch the game, and the home team sent them home happy. Nine different Gryphons had points in the win, while goaltender Andrew Loverock earned a little redemption – in his first game since being pulled against the Warriors on October 25, Loverock made 32 saves for the win.
Joe Underwood (Canton/) and
Kirt Hill (Winnipeg/) scored for the Warriors, who fall to 10-8-4 on the season.
Keaton Hartigan (Kitchener/) was once again the hard-luck loser for the Warriors, turning aside 32 shots in a losing cause.
The first period started with promise for the visiting Warriors, and they found themselves in a rather unusual position – holding a 1-0 lead. When Underwood went five-hole on a partial break at the nine-minute mark, it snapped a streak of eight straight games in which the Warriors surrendered the first goal.
The lead, however, was short-lived. 49 seconds after taking the lead, Guelph's Justin Gvora beat Hartigan to even things up at 1. Less than five minutes later, the Gryphons took the lead on a goal by Jordan Mock, and the first period ended with Guelph holding a 2-1 lead.
Before the two-minute mark of the second, Guelph had stretched their lead to two goals when James Merrett found the back of the net to make it 3-1. Warriors captain Hill responded with his third goal in two nights to narrow the gap to 3-2 heading into the third period.
The Warriors had two power play chances in the third period, but they were unable to sneak the equalizer past Loverock.
The Warriors will now start preparing for the middle leg of their three straight road weekends, as they'll travel down University avenue to take on the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks next Friday night before heading to Oshawa to face the UOIT Ridgebacks.
Notes: The Warriors went o-for-6 on the power play, while the Gryphons went 0-for-3…Hartigan has now made four straight starts, and 6 of the last 7…Hill now has points in 5 straight games.
