Box Score The Waterloo Warriors men's hockey team has found an unusual recipe for success in road games against the York Lions – all they have to do is fall behind 3-0.
For the second time in two games this season at York's Canlan Ice Sports arena, the Warriors erased a 3-0 deficit and scored six straight third period goals en route to a 6-3 victory in North York on Thursday night.
The win was Waterloo's first of 2013, and it snapped the Warriors' losing streak at four. The Warriors also broke out of their offensive drought with six goals in the final frame, including the tying, go-ahead, and insurance markers in a span of 2:45 late in the period.
Warriors captain
Kirt Hill (Winnipeg/) scored the team's first two goals, and
Colin Behenna (Waterloo/) and
Andy Smith (Rosetown/) each registered a goal and an assist in the victory. Jesse Messier had two assists for the hosts in a losing cause. Lions netminder Andrew Perugini, who stymied the Warriors in Waterloo two weeks ago, kicked away 38 shots in the loss. Warriors veteran
Keaton Hartigan (Kitchener/) made 29 saves in between Waterloo's pipes for the victory.
While the game was without a goal in the opening 20 minutes, Warriors head coach
Brian Bourque had to be encouraged by his team's start – Waterloo's starts have not been up to snuff and, although they didn't jump on the board first, they outshot York 14-10 in the opening twenty minutes.
While the Warriors didn't relent in the second period, it was the Lions who found the net first, when John DeGray's point shot found its way through traffic on the man advantage to make it 1-0 York. Less than 2 minutes later, Tyler McGee beat Hartigan in front to extend the lead to two, and the Lions would maintain that advantage through the end of the second.
The Warriors could have rolled over when Michael Santini scored short-handed just over a minute into the third, as it looked like the final nail in Waterloo's coffin. But less than two minutes later, Hill lit the fuse with his first of two on the evening. Then at 7:16 of the period, Hill forced a turnover and completed an outstanding solo shorthanded effort to make the score 3-2.
For a time, it looked like the Warriors might come up just short, as they had numerous chances to tie the game. Things looked even bleaker when, at the mid-way point of the period, leading scorer
Justin Larson (Buckhorn/) was assessed a minor penalty and a 10-minute misconduct for a checking to the head.
But finally, with less than four minutes to play,
Kain Allicock (Markham/) beat Perugini to knot the score at 3. The Warriors then went ahead for good when Behenna ripped the eventual game winner home off a rush with 1:51 remaining. It was Behenna also scored the winner in the final moments against York in Waterloo's first trip there back in October.
Just 44 seconds later,
Riley Sonnenburg (Cambridge/) scored his first career CIS goal when he broke down the left side and let go a wicked wrister that beat Perugini to make it 5-3. Smith added an empty netter to round out the scoring for the Warriors.
Waterloo will now have little time to celebrate their victory, as they'll travel down highway 7 to take on the Guelph Gryphons tomorrow night. Puck drop at the Sleeman Centre is slated for 7:30pm.
