Box Score
The Warriors held the Laurier Golden Hawks to just 60 points to come out on top 67-60 in a defensive battle of Waterloo on Wednesday night at the PAC.
Waterloo's defense came to play as the Hawks shot only 24.7% from the field compared to the Warriors 32.8%. The home side was also clutch from the line going 19-for-24 in the win.
The opening quarter was a sign of things to come as both teams battled the boards and focused on defense first. Laurier held a slight 12-11 lead after one.
The Warriors took control in the second as the Hawks failed to make their shots while Waterloo made them pay on the boards and from outside. Waterloo outscored Laurier 22-11 in the second quarter and held a 33-23 lead into half.
The second half emerged as a seesaw battle with both teams struggling to find their stride from the field while the defensive battle on the boards continued.
With Waterloo up by seven heading into the final quarter, Laurier would force the issue in the paint but Waterloo's defense continued to stand tall, led by
Kyrie Coleman (Washington/) who finished the game with 16 rebounds (13 defensive), one steal and three blocks.
Waterloo would go on a 7-0 run before the Hawks fought their way back to within four with only two minutes to play. After a foul on
Jaspreet Gill (Oliver/), Laurier would come within two late in the game but the next Warrior drive would seal the victory.
Mike Helsby (Waterloo/) would make a run and dash up the court before dishing it to Coleman who laid it in to secure the 67-60 win.
Helsby led all scorers with 17 points going 5-for-12 from the field while hitting 6 of 7 from the free throw line. On top of Coleman's dominating defensive game, he would put up 14 points on offense while
Wells Davis (Mississagua/) contributed with 10.
For the Hawks, Jamar Forde (Mississauga) had 16 points while William Coulthard (Oakville) had 11. CIS athlete of the week Maxwell Allin (Chatham) was held to just four points.
The Warriors look to make it two straight on Saturday when they welcome the McMaster Marauders to the PAC. Tip-off is set for 2pm and the game can be seen live on
