Francis, Warriors earn first win of season

Greg Francis picked up his first win as bench boss of the Warriors and the Waterloo men's basketball team snapped their nine game losing streak, edging the Western Mustangs 75-73 on Wednesday night in London for their first win of the season.
 
Jaspreet Gill (Oliver/) knocked down the winning layup with six seconds remaining in the game to seal the victory for the black and gold.  In just his third game with the Warriors, Gill collected 25 points going 7-for-16 from the field and 10-for-12 from the line.  He also added three rebounds, two assists and four steals in the win.

The Warriors got off to a quick 6-0 lead early in the opening quarter but Western erased that lead just as quick and did not fall behind again in the half as Western led by seven, 41-34 into the break.
 
Waterloo again started the second half with five quick points to narrow the gap to just two points. From there Waterloo tied it at 43-43 and finally took the lead with 1:49 remaining in the third quarter. After three, the Warriors led by two, 60-58.
 
In the final quarter there were nine lead changes and two ties in a very close contest. In the final minute, with Waterloo up by three, Elliott Dooley (Ottawa) of the Mustangs tied it with a corner three with 0:53 remaining.

Both teams took a turn missing a shot until Jaspreet Gill (Oliver/) hit a layup for Waterloo with six seconds remaining. Western was unable to get a shot off in the closing seconds, losing the ball in a scramble on the floor giving Waterloo their first win of the season.
 
Gill had a the game high in points with 25 while Kyrie Coleman (Washington/) added 22 points and eight rebounds for Waterloo. Peter Scholtes (London) led the Mustangs in scoring with 19 points while rookie Elliott Dooley had 14 in a losing effort.
 
The 1-9 Warriors will now turn their attention to the division leading Windsor Lancers (7-3) when the two face-off on Sunday in Windsor.
