Men's tennis walk past UOIT, fall to York and McMaster

The Warriors had a disappointing weekend when they came up short against two of the three teams they played over the weekend.

Friday, Sept. 21
Waterloo 6, UOIT 0

On Friday they traveled to Oshawa to play UOIT and came away with a sweep in the singles winning 6-0. Waterloo's two top players were out of the lineup due to work term commitments. This was an opportunity for rookie Daniel Kolesar (Waterloo/) to make his debut. He did so in fine style winning his match 6-1, 6-0 on the slow Har-tru courts. The doubles matches were not played due to the lateness of the evening and in consideration of the fact that the Warriors had to play York at noon the following day.

Saturday, Sept. 22
York 5, Waterloo 2

On Saturday the match against York was played outdoors on a very cool, windy and sunny day. The Warriors were more at a disadvantage than the Yeomen under these trying conditions as the Warriors train indoors.

The York team was a different caliber from that of the previous evening. With both of Waterloo's two top players joining the lineup, the team lost 2-5. Vincent Chan (Markham/) and Nachiket Yardi (Mississauga/), Waterloo's No. 1 and 2 lost their singles and doubles matches – a rare occurrence.

Now in his third season, Chan had lost only one varsity match prior to Saturday. He and Yardi then suffered an uncharacteristic loss in their doubles which was played very soon after Yardi, too, suffered a disappointing loss in three close sets in singles.  The two successful players on Saturday were No. 3 Alex Sahu and No. 4 Ayaz Awadia (Cambridge/). Both played intelligent and determined tennis to overcome both the conditions and their opponents.

Doubles Results:

Chan & Yardi lost to Ahmed Shebl & Lorent Kryeziu 3-8
Au & Follis lost to David Kishlyansky & Jordan Lima 1-8
Liao & Sahu lost to Kia Khadem &  Mark Cooper 5-8

Singles Results:

Chan lost to Shebl 3-6, 5-7
Yardi lost to Kishlyansky 2-6, 6-3, 4-6
Sahu bt Kryeziu 6-2, 6-1
Awadia bt Olivier Thibault 6-7, 6-2, 6-3
Aaron Au (Richmond Hill/) lost to Jordan Lima 7-6, 3-6, 2-6
Follis lost to Kia Khadem 3-6, 4-6

Sunday, Sept. 23
McMaster 4, Waterloo 3

Back at home on Sunday against McMaster, the Warriors were hoping to earn a win against the Marauders but lost by the merest margin 3-4. The all-important doubles point made the difference and that was decided by just one point. The closeness of the result made it all the more disappointing. Wins in singles came from Chan, Yardi and freshman No. 5 Michael Liao (Thornhill/) who continues to impress.

Doubles Results:
Chan & Yardi bt Josh Cadesky & Abass Panju 8-6
Follis & Au lost to Matt Holland & Jake Morass 2-8
