Warrior baseball splits weekend games

Nolan Pettipiece was named Waterloo's athlete of the week for his opening week performance
Brock 3, Waterloo 2

After getting rained out Saturday, the Warriors baseball team travelled to Milton for the OUA kickoff tournament Sunday where they faced Brock followed by Queen's.
In game 1 against Brock, the game needed extra innings, but in the end the Warriors fell 3-2.

Starting pitcher Jay Flannigan (Cornwall/) (Cornwall) struggled to find his command in the first inning, walking 3 and giving up 2 hits, leading to an early 2 run deficit. However, he settled down after that rough start and didn't allow another run through his 5 innings of work, striking out 6 Badgers.

The Warriors managed to score single runs in the 2nd and 6th innings to tie the game at 2 and send it to extra innings. Tim Borys (Kitchener/) (Kitchener) loaded the bases with one out in the top of the 8th, which led to a sacrifice fly and the go-ahead run crossing the plate for Brock in the top of the 8th. Waterloo stranded the tying run at 2nd base to end the game.

Tim Borys (Kitchener/) took the loss for the Warriors while Phil Owen picked up the win for the Badgers.

Waterloo 3, Queen's 1

In game 2 of the day the Warriors faced the Queen's Gaels, and sent Mike Gatchene (Kitchener/) (Kitchener) to the mound. This was the definition of a pitcher's duel, with neither pitcher giving up a run through 6 innings.

In the top of the 7th inning the Warriors finally got on the board, sparked by a leadoff triple by LF Drew Ballak (Kitchener/) (Kitchener). They managed to score 3 two out runs to take the 3-0 lead.

Head Coach Tim Pegg pulled out all the stops looking for his first career OUA victory, and called on ace SP and reigning OUA Pitcher of the Year Adam Lentz (Calgary/) (Calgary) to preserve the win.

“I went to Albi (Lentz) for a few reasons," commented head coach Tim Peg. "Gatch threw a great game out there and deserved to win it. I also wanted to get my first managerial win out of the way. I know he's a starter, but when you have one of the best pitchers in the league on your bench, why not use him?”

Although Lentz struggled with his command, he nailed down the save and a 3-1 victory for the Warriors.

Gatchene picked up the win for the Warriors, throwing 6 innings, allowing 0 runs on 5 hits, walked 2 and struck out 7. Matt Reagan took the loss for Queen's.
