Warriors drop double header in Thunder Bay

The Waterloo Warriors traveled to Thunder Bay for a weekend double header against CIS No. 2 Lakehead Thunderwolves. In the Friday night contest the Warriors kept it close at times, but lost 84-74. In the second game on Saturday night, Lakehead completed the sweep with an 84-72 win.

Waterloo hit the first bucket of the night, but that's the only time they would lead. Lakehead came ready to play on Saturday and quickly built a 10 point lead at 16-6. Waterloo would narrow the gap a few times in the opening half, down by only 6 later in the second half.
But a 10-1 run by Lakehead brought it back to double digits, and a 40-27 Lakehead lead at half time.

In the second half, whenever Lakehead would extend the lead, Waterloo would make a comeback. And each time Waterloo would get the game within 12-14 points, Lakehead would hit another few baskets. The entire half was played in a 12-18 point range of Lakehead lead.

With the win, Lakehead improves to 16-2 and takes sole possession of first place, with a Laurier loss to McMaster earlier in the day. With the loss, Waterloo falls to 4-14 and is eliminated from playoff contention with four games remaining.

Leading the scoring for Waterloo was Mike Wright (Burlington/Assumption) with 26 points.Andrew Melbourne (Scarborough/Mother Teresa) added 14, while Wayne Bridge (North York/Eastern Commerce) hit for 11. For Lakehead, four players reached double figures with Ryan Thomson's 25 points leading the team. Venzal Russell added 20 points.

Next game for Waterloo is Wednesday, February 8 when the Warriors host the Windsor Lancers. Game time is 8:00pm at the PAC.
