The Waterloo men's basketball team closed out their 2011-12 season with a 73-60 loss to the Brock Badgers on Saturday afternoon in St. Catharines. The Badgers (10-12) clinched fifth place in the OUA west with the win while the Warriors finished in last with a 6-16 record.
The Badgers opened the game with an 11-2 run over the first three minutes. The visiting Warriors answered with a 17-3 run over the final six minutes leading 19-17 after one quarter.
The teams would exchange baskets for the majority of the second quarter with junior Didi Mukendi (St. Cathartines, Ont.) knocking down a three at the buzzer to bring the Badgers within one 37-36 at the half.
Waterloo would extend their lead to three 55-52 after three quarters. With the score tied 60-60, Brock would go on a 13-0 run over the final six minutes of regulation on route to the 13-point victory.
Brock had all five starters in double figures led by Mukendi who registered a game-high 20 points including a season-high five three-pointers. He also added eight rebounds and three assists.
Kraus contributed with 15 points and five assists while becoming the 10th player in school history to record 250 career assists. Ferguson registered a double-double finishing with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Fleming and Mark Gibson (Toronto, Ont.) both chipped in with 10 points and five rebounds each in the victory.
Leading Waterloo were
Zach Angelini (Hamilton/St. Thomas More) and
Andrew Melbourne (Scarborough/Mother Teresa) who added 15 and 12 points respectively in the loss.
For the game, Brock shot 37.5% (24-for-64) from the field and 35.1% (13-for-37) from beyond the arc. Waterloo shot 35.9% (23-for-64) from the field and were 6-for-20 (30.0%) from three-point range.
