Women's hockey close out season with OT win; narrowly miss playoffs

The Waterloo women's hockey team wrapped up their 2011-12 season on a winning note as they topped the Guelph Gryphons 2-1 in overtime.

Unfortunately for the Warriors the two points weren't enough as Western defeated York 4-1 and eliminated their playoff hopes.  Waterloo finished tied for eighth with Brock at 25 points each but the Badgers won the tie-breaker with more wins on the season.

The defensive battle came to a close with only 29 seconds remaining in the overtime period as Emma McMillan (Hastings/) netted a perfect pass from Kelly MacLean (St. George/) to cap off a very successful season.

The win gave Waterloo a 10-11-5 record on the season while the Gryphons finished 18-6-2, good for second place overall and will face the Windsor Lancers in the first round of the OUA playoffs.

Waterloo opened the scoring with only seven seconds remaining in the first period as Kelly Toms (Ennismore/) chipped in a forehand past the glove of Guelph goalie Brooke Siddall (Windsor, Ont.).  The goal came off a broken play as Kate Wagner (Sauble Beach/) fired the puck on net and it deflected off Jessica Tracey (Woodslee/) right on to the stick of Toms.

Both teams tightened up for the remainder of the game before Guelph found the equalizer with only 37 seconds left in the game as Kaitlyn Mora (Guelph, Ont.) banged home a deflected point shot by Jacky Sollis (West Vancouver, B.C.) past Rebecca Bouwhuis (Orillia/).

Bowhuis capped off her stellar rookie campaign with a 30 save performance for the win while Siddall was just as busy allowing just two goals on 33 shots.

The Warriors have a lot to be proud of in a turn around season with a bright future ahead.  Head coach Shaun Reagan was extremely proud of the effort by his girls and would also like to wish all of his graduating seniors success in their future endeavors.  Those graduating seniors are: Caitlin Brydges (Ariss/), Julia Endicott (Toronto/), Sarah Endicott (Toronto/) and Elizabeth Baverstock (Cambridge), who were all honoured prior to the game.
