The Waterloo women's hockey lost a heartbreaker by a score of 4-3 in a shootout to the Brock Badgers on Saturday afternoon at the Columbia Icefield Arena in Waterloo.
Sara Brady scored her second goal of the game with only 23 seconds remaining in the game to even the score at three's before Courtney Stevens scored the shootout winner. Brady also scored in the shootout.
The win secured a playoff spot for the Badgers while the Warriors still have hopes of a playoff berth earning a single point in the game. With a Western loss tomorrow and two points by Waterloo, the black and gold can earn the eighth and final playoff spot with 25 points to Western's 24. A single point won't be enough as Western holds the tie-breaker over the Warriors with more wins on the season.
Waterloo got off to a quick start in the game as
Ona Mezenberg (Owen Sound/) netted her fifth of the season only two minutes into the game on the power play.
Nicole Hébert (Toronto) and
Sarah Endicott (Toronto/) picked up the helpers on the goal.
The score would remain 1-0 for Waterloo into the second period where Brock would score two goals five minutes apart to take a 2-1 lead. Jessica Fickel scored her team leading 15
th of the season at the five minute mark before Brady fired home one of her two goals five minutes later.
Determined to get themselves back in the game Waterloo would find the equalizer on a 5-on-3 power play as
Julia Endicott (Toronto/) snapped home her third of the season. Only 13 seconds later the Warriors would take a 3-2 lead off the stick of
Caitlin Brydges (Ariss/), her first of the year.
The two teams exchanged quality chances throughout an intense period of hockey before the Badgers tied it up 3-3 with a shot from Brittney Cabral that was tipped home by Brady.
Overtime solved nothing and the Badgers went on to score twice in the shootout while
Sarah Endicott (Toronto/) would notch the lone goal for the Warriors as Waterloo fell 4-3 in a shootout.
Rebecca Bouwhuis (Orillia/) was solid between the pipes for Waterloo stopping 31 of 34 shots faces while Badgers goalie Emily Kelly was the busier of the two netminders, allowing three goals on 42 shots.
Waterloo return to the ice tomorrow to fight for their playoff lives as the battle the Guelph Gryphons with two points on their minds while they hope for a York victory over the Western Mustangs. Both games are scheduled for 2pm with Waterloo's game live on
SSN Canada.
