In their first overtime game of the season, Waterloo lost 105-102 to the visiting Western Mustangs on Saturday afternoon.
Waterloo controlled the first half, or more correctly Western had a dreadful first half. At half time Waterloo had a 38-23 lead, thanks to just six Western points in the second quarter and 29% shooting by Western. Waterloo was shooting from outside, hitting 8 of 19 from long range, and in control of the ball with just a single turnover.
In the second half, Western narrowed the gap to just 10, and then watched Waterloo briefly open up a 17 point lead, the largest margin of the game. With 2:09 left in the third it was down to single digits, and Waterloo was up just seven at the end of the third, 58-51.
Western opened the fourth with a 14-6 run and had the lead at 65-64 with 6:28 to play. Western led by as much as 6 at one point, but Waterloo had an 8-0 run of their own and had leads of 2-4 points throughout the final minutes. Waterloo held a 4 point lead when Ryan Barbeau hit from at least 10 feet beyond the arc with 8 seconds remaining.
Cam McIntyre (Kitchener/Kitchener C.I.) hit just one of two free throws, and Greg Morrow hit an inside shot with a second remaining to force overtime at 85-85.
Western hit first in the overtime, but Waterloo recovered and managed a five point lead at 94-89 on a
Zach Angelini (Hamilton/St. Thomas More) three. Western answered with a 10-0 run and a five point lead of their own. In catch up play, Waterloo twice narrowed the gap to a single point, but could not take the lead. Ryan Barbeau hit the free throws down the stretch, and a
Cam McIntyre (Kitchener/Kitchener C.I.) three point attempt with 2 seconds remaining went off to the left.
Western's Ryan Barbeau led all scorers with 46 points, including 40 in the second half. Peter Scholtes had a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds. Three Mustangs had double figures in rebounds as they out-rebounded the Warriors 53-35. For the Warriors,
Cam McIntyre (Kitchener/Kitchener C.I.) led the team with 33 points, including 12 in overtime.
Zach Angelini (Hamilton/St. Thomas More) had a career high with 28 points.
Waterloo now has a 5-15 record in OUA league play with two games remaining. The last home game of the season, and Senior Night, is Wed Feb 15 as the Warriors host Laurier. Game time is 8:00pm at the PAC.
