Warriors close out 2012 with shootout victory over Lions

Rebecca Rutherford scores her first career CIS goal
Box Score The Warrior women's hockey team capped off the 2012 calendar year with a tight 2-1 shootout victory over the York Lions on Sunday afternoon at the CIF arena.

Waterloo snuck out the victory thanks to back-to-back highlight reel moves by Marissa Redmond (Ajax/) and Kelly MacLean (St. George/) in the shootout.  Waterloo goalie Rebecca Bouwhuis (Orillia/) stopped both Lions' shooters while making 25 stops in regulation and overtime play to secure a big two points for the home side.

The win keeps Waterloo (5-10-2) in the eighth and final playoff spot, two points ahead of the ninth place Lions (4-10-2).

The first period was all York with continuous offensive pressure but the Warrior defense and Bouwhuis kept a strong defensive posture to weather the storm and send the game locked at 0's into the intermission.

The second period the Warriors shifted the momentum and were rewarded midway through the frame as Rebecca Rutherford (Ajax/) fired home her first career CIS goal to give Waterloo 1-0 lead.  The goal was set up beautifully by Carolyn Burke (Mississauga/) who slid over the pass to Rutherford.

The Lions turned up the pressure once again in the third period and found the equalizer with 6:35 remaining in the game as Chloe Milano (Maple) capped off a tic-tac-toe play set up by Lisa Stathopulos (Toronto) and Kristen Barbara (Mount Hope).

After overtime settled nothing Redmond stepped up and scored on nice backhand-forehand move before MacLean clinched the victory going to her backhand and roofing it over the shoulder of Lions goalie Megan Lee (Orillia).  Lee stopped 15 of 16 shots faced in regulation and overtime in the loss.

The Warriors head into the exam break with 12 points, one point less than a year ago at the break.  Waterloo will open the New Year with their annual Christmas tournament from January 4-6.
