Warriors give undefeated Blues a scare

Box Score The Waterloo women's basketball team gave the undefeated Toronto Varsity Blues (4-0) all they could handle on Saturday night at the PAC but came up short falling by three, 55-52.

The Warriors outscored the Blues 18-6 in the third quarter to take a 39-36 lead into the fourth quarter but could not maintain that lead to claim their first win of the season.  Waterloo's come back was ignited by back-to-back three's by Marti Killeen (Oakville/) and Laura Burnett (Heidelberg/) and strong presence in the paint by Mackenzie Lougheed (Owen Sound/Owen Sound)

The black and gold faltered from the line going 12-for-22 (54.5%) on the night compared to the Blues 14-for-21 (66.7%), which would be the difference in the game.
Both Jasmine Lewin (Brampton) and Rachael Sider (New Westminster) tallied a game-high 12 points for the Blues, while Amanda Lauzon (Niagara Falls) recorded her first double-double of the season 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Lauzon tallied eight points in the first frame to give the Blues an 18-11 advantage after the first 10 minutes. Toronto maintained a comfortable nine-point lead (30-21) at halftime.

Lewin and Sider combined for 13 points in the fourth quarter to mount the comeback and lead the Blues to their fourth straight win.

For the Warriors rookie Erika Persson (Lund/) led the Warriors with 11 points, while Jacqui Rodrigues (Waterloo/) had nine in the loss.  Persson went 5-for-8 from the field while adding four rebounds and three assists.

Rodrigues was 4-for-5 and also added one from beyond the arc.  Lougheed rounded out the Warrior attack with eight points and had a game high 10 rebounds.

The Warriors are back on the court next weekend with a pair of games against Laurentian and York on the road before returning to home the following weekend to close out 2012 against Carleton and Ottawa.
