The Waterloo Warriors hosted the Ryerson Rams for their OUA home opener on Friday night and came out on the short end of an 81-67 score. The Warriors stayed close to the Rams for three quarters, down just two points with 8:33 to play. Two straight three's keyed a 14-3 run and Ryerson had a double digit lead to close out the game.
Both teams found it tough to get baskets in the opening frame with the score tied at 15-15 after the first quarter. Ryerson had an 8-0 run through the middle of the second quarter, but a
Mike Helsby (Waterloo/) bucket at the buzzer meant the Warriors were within four at half time.
Kyrie Coleman (Washington/) scored the first 10 Warriors points in the second half and the Warriors had their only lead of the second half at 40-39. Ryerson quickly regained the lead and never relinquished again.
Kyrie Coleman (Washington/) led all scorers with 28 points and also grabbed 11 rebounds.
Wayne Bridge (North York) was the only other Warrior in double figures with 11 points. Ryerson had three players in double figures, lead by Bjorn Michaelsen with 22 points and 8 rebounds and Jahmal Jones with 21 points. Ryerson shot at 64% clip in the second half, many on deep drives to the basket.
