The new look Waterloo men's basketball team did not make the season debut they were hoping for as the Queen's Gaels handed the black and gold a 83-63 loss on Sunday at the ARC Main Gym in Kingston.
The Gaels fell behind early in the first quarter, however their consistent shooting and patient offensive playmaking gave them a large lead for the second half. With the win, the Gaels improve to 2-0 in league play while Waterloo opens at 0-1.
Greg Faulkner (Kingston) kick-started things for the Gaels in the second quarter, knocking down seven points, including a three-point play.
James Asefa (Toronto) knocked down back-to-back threes to cap a Gaels 13-0 run and give them a 27-18 lead.
Queen's continued their dominance from beyond the arc with
Andrew Mavety (Vancouver) notching two, and
three other Gaels each hitting one to close out the half—giving the Gaels a 42-24 lead. Waterloo had an early 11-8 lead, but the Gaels outscored the Warriors 34-13 from that point on.
The second half featured consistent play for the Gaels, who kept even with Waterloo in scoring throughout the third quarter, helping to solidify their large lead. The Gaels continued dominating in the fourth quarter, outscoring Waterloo 24-21 to add an exclamation mark to their victory. Queen's had the better percentages from the field, shooting 39%; and 37% from three-point range. Waterloo was 37% from the field and 36% from beyond the arc.
The Gaels outrebounded Waterloo 55-32 including 34-5 on the Waterloo offensive glass, allowing Queen's to limit Waterloo to only four second-chance points.
Wells Davis (Mississagua/) led the Warriors in scoring in the losing effort with 10 points and seven rebounds.
Kyrie Coleman (Washington/) and
Ben Davis (Mississagua/) each had 9 points while
Wayne Bridge (North York) added eight.
Faulkner led the Gaels to victory with his game high 18 points.
The Warriors will look to right the ship next weekend in a pair of home games against Ryerson on Friday and Toronto on Saturday. Both games tip off at 8pm and can be seen lives on SSN Canada.
