The Toronto Varsity Blues cruised to a 4-0 win over the Waterloo Warriors in the first semifinal of the day at Warrior Field to advance to tomorrow's championship game at noon.
Both teams would get several quality chances in the opening minutes but goal keepers,
Hilary Neeb (Wellesley/) and Kathryn Williams (Burlington, Ont.) would stand tall for their respective teams.
The best chance for the Warriors came on a giveaway by the Blues defence where
Courtney Bisch (Wellesley/) would find herself all alone on Williams but could not slip one past the keeper.
Toronto then took control in the late going of the opening half earning three straight short corners. On the third attempt forward Alex Thicke (North Vancouver, BC) would benefit from a perfect setup and have an easy tap in to put Toronto up 1-0.
The score would remain 1-0 into the second half with Waterloo earning an early chance off the stick of
Melissa Lewis (Waterloo/) (Waterloo, Ont.) and Bisch but Williams would spoil the opportunities.
The Blues would find the insurance marker at the 42
nd minute mark on yet another corner. Sara Ali (Toronto) would step into one from the line and Rachel Fackoury (Maryhill, Ont.) jumped all over the rebound to put it behind a helpless Neeb.
Toronto continued their dominating offensive performance but Neeb again continued to make highlight reel saves to keep her team within striking distance. If Neeb wasn't stopping it, her defence was helping out as both Winnie Huyhn and
Katie Farrugia (Burlington/) saved the ball from going into an empty net on two different occasions.
The Blues would show why they are the top team in the country, wearing down the Warriors defence and adding two more quick goals as Thicke notched her second of the game and Tegan Stairs (Kitchener, Ont.) would get in on the action to secure the 4-0 win for the Blues.
Toronto will advance to play the winner of the Guelph/Western semifinal for the OUA gold medal while Waterloo still has a lot to play for as they battle the loser of that game for the third and final OUA berth to the national championship.
