The Warriors played their final home match of the 2012 season on Friday against McGill University losing 1-6 to the Redmen. The Warriors were without the services of their no.1 and 2 players who were unable to play due to co-op work commitment. The remaining team members had to step up two places higher than their regular levels. To their credit, they all put up spirited fights and the matches were more closely contested than the overall score indicates.
Preventing the sweep was a determined and brave effort by
Lee Follis (Brantford/St. John's College) playing at no. 5. He came back to win the second set in a tie-break and the super tie-break (in lieu of a third set) 10-6. A satisfying and remarkable comeback considering he was outplayed in the first set losing it 0-6. Rookie
Michael Liao (Thornhill/) stepping up to play at no. 2 had a three-set battle before losing the super tie-break 10-4. Another sliver of satisfaction came when the pickup pair of Alex Sahu and
Ayaz Awadia (Cambridge/) playing at no. 1 doubles had a very good match to win 8-6.
The Warriors men and women travel to Oshawa on Thursday evening to play in the OUA Championships which starts Friday morning and continues to Sunday. They will be at full strength in numbers and are planning to give of their best this Thanksgiving weekend.
