Men's Basketball

Struggles continue for men's basketball

Box Score
After starting the season 4-1 in their first five games, the Warrior men's basketball team have dropped their last five to fall to 4-6.  Their latest loss would come at the hands of the McMaster Marauders who improved to 8-2 on the season with a 97-84 victory over the black and gold.

A slow start to the game saw top point getter Cam Michaud draw fouls twice within the opening minute of the contest. The Warriors took an early lead of 8-6 and made another lay-up for the four point lead at 5:55, but McMaster would respond with a lay-up of their own. Joe Rocca would tie it up at 10.

By 3:30, the Warriors would be forced to call their first time out of the game as the Marauders took a six point lead at 18-12. The Warriors would rally to catch up, but as the score read 19-18 in favour of the Marauders, Rocca sunk a three-pointer to put McMaster back ahead by four. The quarter would end with the Marauders up by five at 27-22.

The Marauders would maintain their five point lead throughout the first part of the second quarter and would extend it to seven with a Victor Raso basket and foul. Both teams continued to foul throughout the second quarter and a number of missed shots on Waterloo's end allowed the Marauders to keep their lead. A three-pointer from Brett Sanders put the Marauders up by six with less than two minutes left in the half. The final score going into halftime would be 43-38 in favour of the home team. Sanders would have a team-high nine points going in to the second half.

After two minutes in the third, the Warriors would call a timeout with McMaster ahead by eight thanks in part to a three-pointer from captain Raso. The Marauders would then finally take the double-digit lead at 61-49 mid-way through the third quarter with a three-pointer from Cam Michaud. Later in the quarter with 1:20 to go, rookie Aaron Redpath would sink a three to extend McMaster's lead to 18. Despite the Warriors making a basket at the buzzer the scoreboard would read 74-58 for McMaster.

In the fourth, the Marauders continued to dominate the game pushing their lead to 23 with a dunk from Michaud. A number of Marauders were contributors to their eighth win of the season as they improved to 8-2 in conference play.

Joining Michaud in double-digit points included Rocca with 20, Raso with 11 and Redpath with 10.

For the Warriors, Wayne Bridge (North York/Eastern Commerce) scored 20, Mike Wright (Burlington/Assumption) recorded another 18, Cam McIntrye had 16 and Justin Johnson (Greensville/Parkside) added another 11.

Waterloo look to halt their slide on Wednesday as they face the 7-3 Windsor Lancers on the road.
