Warriors lose heart breaker to Blues in overtime

Game Summary

The Waterloo women's hockey team lost a heart breaker on Friday evening as they fell to the Varsity Blues 4-3 in overtime in their first game of 2012.

The Blues scored with only 16 seconds remaining in the game to tie the score 3-3 and wasted little time earning the extra point as Kelly O'Hanlon (Markham, Ont.) of the Blues potted her third of the season 45 seconds into overtime to give her team the 4-3 win.

After a scoreless first period, fifth-year forward Brenley Jorgensen (Kingston, Ont.) notched her 50th career goal as a Varsity Blue.

Waterloo evened the score at 1-1 midway through the frame off a faceoff play as Lindsey Ceasar fired a puck at the net and fourth-year forward Jessica Tracey (Woodslee/) was there to bury the rebound.

The Blues peppered Waterloo netminder Rebecca Bouwhuis (Orillia/) with shots but the visiting squad would get the go-ahead goal.  Warriors veteran defenceman Sarah Endicott (Toronto/) caught U of T goaltender Krista Funke (Regina, B.C.) out of her net during a clearing attempt and fired the puck into the open mesh for the shorthanded marker.

The Blues put on the pressure on the ensuing play but the Warriors headed into the second intermission with a 2-1 advantage.

The play went back-and-forth to start the third period but things got interesting when Funke denied second-year Waterloo forward Kelly Toms (Ennismore/) on a breakaway.  As the play went down the ice, Warriors defenceman Kate Wagner (Sauble Beach/) mishandled the puck at the side of the net on a breakout attempt and Blues rookie forward Jacqueline Scheffel (Waubaushene, Ont.) was there to poke it in and even the score.

Waterloo responded just over two minutes later as Julia Endincott sent a point shot through traffic to find the back of the net.

With Funke on the bench, the Blues tied the game again with just 16 seconds remaining as Jorgensen potted her second of the game off a rebound at the side of the net.  Toronto then earned the overtime victory off of O'Hanlon's stick to pick up a crucial two points.

With the loss Waterloo now sits tied for seventh spot with a 6-8-2 record only one point back of the sixth and final playoff spot held by York.  The Blues improved to 8-6-1 good for fifth spot in the OUA.

Waterloo will have the rest of the week off before returning to action next weekend against Ryerson on Friday and again against Toronto on Saturday.
