Waterloo traveled to London on Wednesday night and lost to the Western Mustangs by a score of 81-69.
The pattern is becoming too familiar in 10 straight OUA losses, with a strong start and a fourth quarter collapse. Western scored the first basket of the game, but then Waterloo hit from long range three times to take an 11-2 lead early. After the first quarter, Western had narrowed the gap, but Waterloo led 18-17.
Early in the second quarter Western used three long range shots of their own as part of a 13-0 run and a nine point lead. By half time the Western lead was just 3 points, at 34-31.
Western maintained their lead the entire third quarter, but the game remained close until a late push by Western made it 56-49 after three.
Waterloo was unable to stop Western early in the fourth while Western went on a 16-2 run, lead by over 20 and effectively sealed the win.
Waterloo did have a 14-2 run late, but it was far too late to mount a comeback.
Ryan Barbeau had 20 points to lead Western, 16 of them in the final quarter. Peter Scholtes had 19 points. Waterloo was led by
Mike Wright (Burlington) with 16 and
Andrew Melbourne (Scarborough) with 12 points.
Cam McIntyre (Kitchener) did not play for Waterloo.
With the loss Waterloo drops to last place in the OUA West, one game behind the Mustangs. Next game for Waterloo is Saturday afternoon when Waterloo hosts McMaster. Game time is 3:00pm at the PAC.
