Not so fantastic for Warriors in loss to Gryphons

Box Score By: Martin Timmerman

It was Fantastic Alumni, Faculty and Staff Day at Waterloo on Saturday, but the Guelph Gryphons came in hot and beat the Warriors 80-68. The large home crowd was cheering the Warriors for first basket, but Guelph would start the game on a 13-0 run before Waterloo could get on the board at the 4:20 mark.

Waterloo made just three from long range in the first and were down 23-9 at the first quarter mark. In the second Waterloo would narrow the gap as Mike Wright (Burlington/Assumption) had 18 points by half time. At one point late in the half it was just a four point margin, but Guelph would lead 37-29 at the break.

In the second half the crowd cheering for the first basket had one within15 seconds as the Warriors came out ready to play. The Warriors narrowed the lead to just 3 points early, with the score 39-36 for Guelph.

Shortly after, Guelph's Michel Clark found a spot in the corner and hit three long threes in a row and Guelph had a double digit lead again. Waterloo never recovered. Guelph had a 20+ point lead through most of the 4th quarter before Waterloo closed the game with the last 12 points to make the final score look closer than the game.

For Waterloo, Mike Wright (Burlington/Assumption) led all scorers with 23 points. The only other Warrior in double figures was Andrew Melbourne (Scarborough/Mother Teresa) with 12 points.
Guelph had four players in double figures, with Dan McCarthy and Michel Clark leading the way with 15 points each.

The loss was Waterloo's ninth in a row in league play and leaves them with a 4-10 record in the OUA West. Eight games remain. Next game for Waterloo is Wednesday night as the Warriors travel to London to visit the Western Mustangs. Western has the same 4-10 record as Waterloo.
