Women's hockey unable to close out Blues, fall in OT

Kelly MacLean scored Waterloo's lone goal in the game
Game Summary

The Waterloo women's hockey team dropped an afternoon game 2-1 I overtime to the Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday.  Waterloo suffered the same fate a week ago in which they fell 4-3 in extra time.  Fifth-year forward Amanda Fawns scored 57 seconds into overtime to give Toronto the big two points.

The win improves the Blues record to 9-7-1 this season, and moves them into sixth place in the OUA.  Waterloo sits one game below .500 with a 7-8-3 record two points back of Toronto for the final playoff position.

Second-year Varsity Blues goaltender Nicole Kesteris was solid throughout the game, shutting the door on all four of Waterloo's powerplay opportunities, including three consecutive advantages in the first period.

The Warriors were unable to solve Kesteris until midway through the second period, when Kelly MacLean (St. George/) found herself all alone in front of the net and slammed home a centering pass from Waterloo captain Caitlin Brydges (Ariss/).

The Blues pressed hard for the equalizer in the final period and were finally rewarded when team captain Karolina Urban of Kamloops, B.C., won a battle for the puck in front of the net before muscling it past Warrior's goaltender Martina Michaud (Etobicoke/) to tie the game with just 3:33 left in regulation time.

Kesteris shone again in the final minutes, stopping a wrap-around attempt at 1:41, and making a save on a point-blank opportunity with 52 seconds remaining to help send the game to overtime.

The Blues would only need 57 seconds of extra time before Fawns tipped home a point shot from rookie defenceman April Looije (Mississauga, Ont.) to give Toronto the win.

Michaud stopped 24 shots in the loss while Kesteris was less busy making 16 stops of 17 shots faces.

Waterloo returns to the Columbia Icefield Arena for a pair of home games against Windsor and Western on Saturday and Sunday.  Both games are scheduled for 2pm.
