Warriors clipped by Hawks in overtime

Game Summary

The new year continues to cause the Warriors problems as they dropped their fourth straight game in a 2-1 overtime loss to cross-town Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday night at the Columbia Icefield Arena.

Waterloo is now 11-6-4 on the season and sit in third place with 26 points while Laurier holds the eighth and final play spot with a 6-13-1 good for 13 points.

The game was a low scoring affair with Justin Larson (Buckhorn/) of Buckhorn, Ont., opening the scoring for Waterloo late in the first, capitalizing on the power play after a slashing call against Laurier's Mitch Lebar of Aurora, Ont.  Larson's sixth goal of the season was assisted by Josh Schappert (Winnipeg/) and Andy Smith (Rosetown/).

The Hawks quickly recovered with a power play goal of their own from James Marsden of Exeter, Ont., with Thomas Middup of Richmond Hill, Ont., and Brook Albion of Milton, Ont., assisting on the goal.

The scoring slowed after the first however with neither team capitalizing on their power play chances and the game was sent to overtime.

It took only 1:24 into the extra frame for the game to be decided as Laurier's Tyler Stothers (Oakville, Ont.) fired home his seventh goal of the season. The goal was unassisted and as with the Hawks first goal, came on the power play.

Both goalies were strong between the pipes with Justin Leclerc (Saskatoon/) of the Warriors stopping 28 of 30 shots while Ryan Daniels was near perfect for the Hawks allowing only one goal on 36 shots.

Waterloo returns to action next weekend on Friday as they face the Windsor Lancers at the CIF arena before they take to the ice at Ivor Wynne Stadium on Sunday (Jan. 22) as part of the OUA's first ever Outdoor Classic when Waterloo faces Brock.
