Warrior baseball kicked off their 2011 season on Wednesday night against the Laurier Golden Hawks suffering a 4-3 defeat in 10 innings.
Laurier got off to an early start loading the bases with no one out in the first inning and cashing in two runs with a base hit. Starter
Anthony Douris (Newmarket/) then settled in and got out of the jam, leaving two men on base.
Waterloo struck for one run in the top of the second with a two out RBI double from shortstop
Daniel Baggio (Windsor/). Laurier answered in the bottom of the second with a single run. Starting pitcher Douris lasted five innings, allowing three runs, all earned on six hits. He walked four and struck out three.
Rookie reliever
Jay Flannigan (Cornwall/) pitched one and two-third innings of relief recording five strikeouts. Waterloo tied the game in the eighth inning with a two run single from Dave Allen.
The score remained tied until the bottom of the 10
th inning when Laurier scored one run on a two out single off
Joel Smith (Chatham/). Smith was charged with the loss allowing one run on three hits in two-third innings of work.
Offensively the Warriors only managed six hits, with Baggio leading the way with two and an RBI. Dave Allen chipped in with one hit and two RBI's. Next action for the Warriors is a pre-season tournament at Larry Pearson Field hosted by Laurier where they play four games against McMaster, Queen's, Toronto and Brock.
