Warriors clinch playoff berth with victory over Rams; face Queen's in quarter-finals

Friday, February 11 vs. Ryerson
Waterloo 3, Ryerson 0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-17)

The Warrior men's volleyball team defeated the Ryerson Rams in straight sets to clinch a playoff berth.  Waterloo controlled the play from start to finish winning their ninth match of the season.

With the win, the black and gold improved to 9-10 on the season while Ryerson fell to 6-14.  Waterloo won its sixth game of 2011 after only winning nine in 2010.

Waterloo was led by Aleks Poldma (Toronto, Ont.) who had nine kills, one service ace and three assisted blocks.  Jordan Dyck (St. Catharines, Ont.) had eight kills for Waterloo while Fiodar Kazhamiaka (Waterloo, Ont.) and Matt Snyder (Kitchener, Ont.) each had six kills to round out the well balanced Warrior attack.

For Ryerson, Chris McLaughling (Ottawa, Ont.) had seven kills in a game that saw 15 different Rams receiving court time.

Waterloo will wrap up their season tomorrow night as they host the York Lions at 8:00 pm.

Saturday, February 12 vs. York

York 3, Waterloo 0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-22)

With the sixth place spot already locked up, the Warriors gave their rookies court time in 3-0 set loss to the York Lions on Saturday night at the PAC.  Waterloo was competitive in every set showing their depth.

Graduating seniors Matt Snyder (Kitchener/Warriors) and Dave Steiner (Dundas/Warriors) with their family and friends in attendance were recognized for their commitment and dedication to the Waterloo men's volleyball program for the last several seasons.

Waterloo wrapped up the 2010-11 regular season with a 9-11 record, good for sixth spot while York concluded with a 7-13 record missing the playoffs by two points.

Ben Toornstra (Exeter, Ont.) led the team with nine kills and three assisted blocks while James Evans (Rockwood, Ont.) had seven kills.  Setter's Scott Thomson (St. Marys, Ont.) and Kevin Wiseman (Lively, Ont.) had a combined 28 assists in the losing effort.

For York, Ray Szeto (Sutton, Ont.), Felipe Humana-Paredes (Toronto, Ont.), and Nikola Sandic (Etobicoke, Ont.) each had eight kills in the offensive attack. 

Waterloo will travel to Kingston to face the Queen's Gaels in the OUA quarter-finals on Saturday, February 19 at 7:00 pm.  The Warriors split the season series with the Gaels.  The winner of that game will clinch a spot in the OUA Final Four hosted by Western in London February 25 and 26.
