Game Summary
The Waterloo women's hockey team scored three goals in the final five minutes to edge the Brock Badgers 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Columbia Icefield Arena, in their final game of 2011.
Kelly MacLean (St. George/) was in on all three goals while scoring the game winning goal at 17:36 on the power play to give Waterloo their sixth win of the season.
In what was their final regular season game before the Christmas break the Warriors improved to 6-8-1 and sit tied for Brock (6-7-1) for eighth place with 13 points. Both teams are only one point back of York and Western for sixth and two points back of Toronto for fifth.
Neither team were able to find the net in the opening two periods with the best Waterloo chance coming off the stick of
Emma McMillan (Hastings/) in the first as she found herself all alone on Badgers goalie Chantal Bicket who was equal to the task.
In the second period Brock answered with several chances of their own but could not solve Waterloo netminder
Rebecca Bouwhuis (Orillia/) who also received help from her post twice.
Brock finally broke the tie 44 seconds into the third period on the power play as Jessica Fickel notched her seventh goal of the season. Waterloo responded with five minutes remaining in the period as McMillan would make good on her second good chance of the game for her third of the season.
Only two minutes later MacLean gave her team the lead with her eighth of the season on the power play. MacLean made a perfect deflection off of a
Sarah Endicott (Toronto/) shot from the point. McMillan added her second of the game into the empty net to cap off a very strong game for the fourth year kinesiology student.
Bouwhuis stopped 17 of 18 shots faced for her sixth win of the season while Bicket was solved twice on 28 shots.
Waterloo will enjoy a month off before returning to action in 2012. The Warriors host their annual
Christmas tournament from December 27-29 at the CIF arena.
