Warriors fall to Voyageurs in defensive battle

Box Score The Waterloo Warriors dropped a close contest to the Laurentian Voyageurs by a score of 57-51on Saturday night at the PAC gym.  The defensive battle saw Laurentian outscore the black and gold 17-8 in the fourth quarter to sneak away with the victory, their second of the season. 

Waterloo dropped to 1-5 on the season in the loss while Laurentian are now 2-4, good for sixth spot in the OUA east division.

The game opened up with both teams showing off their defensive stature as Laurentian held the Warriors to only six first quarter points while tallying 14 of their own. 

The Warriors offense woke up in the second quarter as rookie Sam McIntyre (Waterloo/) began to catch fire for her squad.  Waterloo would outscore the Voyageurs 22-15 and found themselves down by only one, 29-28 heading into half.

The second half was a see-saw battle between the two teams as Waterloo continued to force the issue inside the paint and was rewarded with several free throw attempts. 

With the Warriors up 43-40 in the final quarter, Laurentian would bounce back with a strong offensive quarter and several trips to the charity stripe to secure the 57-50 victory.  In total the Voyageurs made 29 trips to the line, successful on only 12 of those while Waterloo was 10-of-19 from the line.  Laurentian was 37.7% from the field compared to a lowly 27.7% by the Warriors. 

Erin Simpson of Sudbury, Ont., was dominant in the battle scoring a game high 24 points as she went 8-for-13 from the field while knocking down five three pointer's in just seven attempts.  She was also 50% at the free-throw line.

For the Warriors, McIntyre led her team with 12 points going 4-for-9 from the field while knocking down 4-of-8 from the line.  Second year forward Theresa Jacobse (Mission) added 10 points in the loss.

Waterloo conclude their OUA crossover games next weekend as they travel to Ottawa to face the Carleton Ravens on Friday, followed by the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Saturday.
