The Waterloo men's volleyball team dropped their third game of the season losing to the Queen's Gaels 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-22) on Saturday evening at the PAC gym.
The two teams battled back and forth all game long with the Gaels pulling ahead in each of the three sets to take the straight sets victory. With the win Queen's moved to 2-3 on the season while Waterloo fell to 3-3.
The first set saw both teams get off to a sloppy start with the Gaels awakening in the middle to pull ahead by a score of 18-14 and would not look back en route to a 25-21 first set win.
Waterloo took control early in the second set as they jumped out to an 9-4 lead only to have the Gaels claw their way back into the set. Tied at 18, the Gaels would only give up three more points to take the set once again by a score of 25-21.
The third set would prove to be the most exciting set of the match as Waterloo and Queen's found their games, creating many lengthy rallies. The point of the match would come with the Gaels up 7-5 and both teams showing their defensive stature before
Cameron Wheelan (Barrie/) would put an end to the rally with one of his five kills in the game.
Unfortunately for Waterloo this could not rally the squad as they would drop the next four points to find themselves down 11-6. After cutting into Queen's lead to make the score 13-10 the Gaels would notch three straight points to take a commanding 16-10 lead.
The black and gold would not die however taking the next six of eight points and found themselves down only two, 18-16. Queen's and Waterloo would continue their see-saw third set affair before Queen's would pull away late in the set to take it 25-22 and earn the straight set victory.
Joren Zeeman led the Gaels attack with a staggering 18 kills on 31 attempts and also chipped in defensively with six digs.
Fiodar Kazhamiaka (Waterloo/) was the top point getter for the Warriors with eight kills and one service ace.
Tyler Motherwell (Scarborough) had a strong game at the net with seven blocks to lead all players. Setter
Scott Thomson (St. Marys/) had 23 assists in the loss.
Waterloo has a full two weeks off before returning to action on Friday, November 25 against the Western Mustangs in London.
