Women's hockey shutout by Gaels; topple Ridgebacks in pair of home games

Game Summary

The Waterloo women's hockey team was shutout 3-0 by the defending OUA Champions, Queen's Gaels on Saturday afternoon at the CIF arena in Waterloo.  The loss was the fifth straight for the Warriors who dropped to 1-6-0 on the season while Queen's improved to 5-1-0.

Queen's goalie Karissa Savage of Calgary, Alta. stopped all 18 shots faced to earn the shoutout while Warrior netminder Rebecca Bouwhuis (Orillia/) allowed two goals on 17 shots.

Queen's scored their first two goals of the game within the first three minutes and played sound defense the remainder of the game to seal the victory.  The Gaels would add an empty netter with one second remaining to take the 3-0 win.

Alex Cieslowski (Oakville, Ont.) scored the early marker only 1:43 into the game which would stand up as the winner.  Alana Smith (Aurora, Ont.) added a first period goal while Kelly Eustache (Oakville, Ont.) contributed with an empty netter.

Waterloo will look to snap their losing streak on Sunday as they face the UOIT Ridgebacks at home.  Puck drop is set for 2pm.

Game Summary

The Waterloo women's hockey team snapped a five game losing streak on Sunday afternoon as they earned a convincing 4-1 win over the visiting UOIT Ridgebacks.

Waterloo scored three unanswered goals in a span of 10 minutes in the second period and did not look back en route to their second win of the season.  Waterloo now sits a 2-6-0 while the Ridgebacks dropped to the identical record.

UOIT opened the scoring late in the first period as forward Kate Gordanier of Gananoque, Que., notched her first goal of the season with assists going to Jill Morillo (Whitby, Ont.) and Sarah Worthington (Whitby, Ont.).  The Ridgeback goal would be the only puck to get past Waterloo starting goalie Rebecca Bouwhuis (Orillia/) as she stopped 23 of 24 shots faced on the afternoon.

Down 1-0 heading into the second period, the Warriors offense would awaken with Kelly MacLean (St. George/) scoring her team leading fifth goal of the season only three minutes into the frame.  Kelly Toms (Ennismore/) fired her first goal of the season past Ridgebacks goalie Jessica Larabie (Pickering, Ont.) seven minutes later while Lindsey Ceaser (Owen Sound/) added her first three minutes later to give Waterloo a 3-1 lead.

MacLean would notch her second goal of the game and sixth of the season for the insurance marker at 3:52 of the third period to lead her team to the 4-1 victory.

Larabie would surrender all four goals on 27 shots while Bouwhuis picked up her second win of the season.

The Warriors begin a four game road trip next weekend as they face the Brock Badgers (5-3-0) on Friday followed by Guelph (6-1-1) on Saturday.
