The Waterloo field hockey team captured their second straight OUA bronze medal after defeating the Western Mustangs 2-1 on Sunday morning in Guelph.
The Warriors wasted no time and got on the board early in the first half. At 11-minutes into the game,
Melissa Lewis (Waterloo/) (Waterloo, ON) accepted a beautiful cross and was able to put the ball in the back of the Western net.
Western fought back and created three strong scoring chances, but each time Waterloo managed to fend off their attacks. Waterloo led Western 1-0 at half.
In the second half, the Warriors looking to extend their lead, were rewarded with a goal after
Courtney Bisch (Wellesley/) (Wellesley, ON) raised the ball over the goalkeep into the top corner of the net.
Western had a tough time using the corner to their advantage, but their efforts finally paid off when Elisbaeth Tate (Richmond, BC) poked one past the Warriors goalkeep.
In the final minutes of the match, Western attempted to put some plays in motion, but a determined Waterloo squad would not give up the lead. Waterloo would take the bronze title, their second in as many seasons. Unfortunately for the Warriors they would not qualify for the CIS Championship this season as the OUA only has two berth's this season with the University of Calgary as the host.
