Warriors split weekend double headers

Starting pitcher Adam Lentz pitched a complete game shutout on Friday night and has an ERA of 0.66 on the season
Friday, Sept. 30 vs. Laurier – Game 1
Laurier 11, Waterloo 1


Waterloo dropped the opening game of their Friday night double header to Laurier 11-1.  Waterloo fell behind early, trailing 6-1 after three innings.  Starter Brandon Beattie (St. Catharines/) took the loss, allowing seven runs on eight hits in four innings of work.  The Warriors also made five errors in the first three innings to cut Beattie's night short. 

Reliever Johnathan Gbedemah (Guelph/) had trouble finding the strike zone as he allowed four runs on four hits and three walks in relief.  Offensively the Warriors were held to just two hits, one by Dave Allen and one by Daniel Baggio (Windsor/) with Allen driving in the lone Warrior run.

Friday, Sept. 30 vs. Laurier – Game 2
Waterloo 1, Laurier 0

Waterloo got back into the win column in game two with a 1-0 shutout victory in a well-pitched game from both sides.  Waterloo scored a run in third inning on a sacrifice fly by Ben Tinklin (Kitchener/) to lead 1-0 and hung on from there. 

Waterloo was only able to muster four hits on the night, with Drew Ballack, James McCullough (Toronto/), Craig Van Ooteghem (Kitchener/) and Nolan Pettipiece (Burlington/) each chipping in with one hit. 

The story of the game was Waterloo starter Adam Lentz (Calgary/) who threw a complete game for his fourth win of the season.  Lentz went seven innings, allowing no runs on two hits and he struck out 13 to lower his ERA to 0.66 on the season.

Sunday, Oct. 2 @ Guelph – Game 1
Guelph 5, Waterloo 1


Waterloo lost game one of the Sunday double header to Guelph 5-1 on a cold and rainy day.  Waterloo led 1-0 after five innings but Guelph exploded for five runs with two out in the bottom of the sixth inning. 

Starter Anthony Douris (Newmarket/) took the loss, allowing five runs on eight hits and he struck out five in five and two-third innings.  Mike Gatchne led the way offensively with two hits, while Matt Michael (Niagara Falls/) and Ben Norris (Waterloo/) each had one hit.  Daniel Baggio (Windsor/) also chipped in with a hit and drove in the only Warrior run.

Sunday, Oct. 2 @ Guelph – Game 2
Waterloo 8, Guelph 7


Waterloo picked up their 11th win of the year with an 8-7 win over Guelph in game two of the double header. 

Waterloo held an early 5-1 lead after two innings but starter Joel Smith (Chatham/) found trouble in the third as Guelph cut the score to 5-4.  Smith lasted only two innings, allowing four runs on three hits and he struck out one.  Reliever Mike Gatchene (Kitchener/) pitched three innings, allowing a run in both the fourth and fifth inning and the Warriors fell behind 6-5. Gatchene allowed two runs on three hits and he struck out one. 

Down 6-5 heading into the seventh inning the Warriors were able to plate three runs to take the lead for good.  Waterloo's third pitcher of the game, Matt Reeves (London/), picked up the win going two innings allowing one run on two hits.  Dave Allen led the way offensively with three hits and two RBI and Craig Van Ooteghem (Kitchener/) chipped in with two hits and an RBI. 

Four other Warriors chipped in with a hit each.  Waterloo's record now sits at 11 wins and 7 losses and they finish up the regular season next weekend with a double header against Queens Friday in Kingston and a single game against Guelph on Saturday at Jack Couch Park in Kitchener.
