Warriors humbled by Badgers in 5-2 loss

Game Summary

The No. 9 ranked Waterloo men's hockey team dropped their second game of the season as the Brock Badgers defeated the Warriors 5-2 on Friday night at the Seymour-Hannah Centre in St. Catharines on Friday night.

Waterloo opened the scoring 5:45 into the opening period on the power play as Joe Underwood (Canton/) and Kirt Hill (Winnipeg/) setup Jarrett Schnurr (Waterloo/) for his fourth goal of the season.

Less than a minute later at 6:21, Brock tied it up as sophomore Kaine Geldart (Kingston, Ont.) beat Waterloo goaltender Keaton Hartigan (Kitchener/) for his third goal of the season.

The Badgers would go up 2-1 on the power play just 1:58 into the second period as sophomore Thomas Stajan (Mississauga, Ont.) and freshman Sean Jones (Newmarket, Ont.) setup sophomore CJ Dickson (Thorold, Ont.). 

Brock would extend their lead to 4-1 adding two quick goals less than a minute a part. At the 6:39 mark of the second, Stajan would bury a shot past Hartigan with senior Derek Brochu (Welland, Ont.) and Jones adding the assists. At 7:29, Dickson would register his second goal of the night with Gaulton and Geldart adding the helpers.

The Warriors would cut the lead to two at 13:59 of the third period as Hill added his fifth goal of the season. Justin Larson (Buckhorn/) and Underwood added assists.  Hill now sits second in the OUA in scoring with 13 points (5g, 8a)

The Badgers would secure the victory at 18:46 of the third when Brochu added the empty netter for his first goal of the campaign. Stajan and Gignac were credited with the assists. For Stajan, it was his fourth three-point performance of the season.

In goal, Brock's Kurt Jory (Brandon, Man.) recorded 22 saves for his third victory of the season. Hartigan recorded 34 saves on 38 shots in the loss. 

Waterloo (4-2-0) look to rebound on Sunday as they face cross-town rivals Laurier Golden Hawks for the first battle of Waterloo of the season at the Memorial Recreation Complex.  Puck drop is set for 7:30pm.
