GUELPH, Ont. – The University of Western Ontario Mustangs and University of Waterloo Warriors advance to the semifinals of the OUA Field Hockey Championships with victories in their first round games, hosted by the University of Guelph at Varsity Field earlier today (Oct. 28).
The Mustangs were the first team to advance with a 4-2 victory over the McGill Martletts in the first game on Friday afternoon. In the second game of the day the Waterloo Warriors defeated the Atlantic University Sport (AUS) champion St. Mary's Huskies with a 4-1 final.
The Mustangs and Warriors will now advance and compete in the semifinals on Saturday against the league's top two teams. The Mustangs will face the Toronto Varsity Blues, seeded first at 12:00 p.m., while the Warriors will face the second-seeded Guelph Gryphons at 2:00 p.m. On the line is not only a spot in the OUA final but also a berth in the CIS Championships.
In Waterloo's victory over St. Mary's the Warriors netted a pair of goals in each half for a balanced scoring attack. The Warrior scoring was spread out as
Winnie Huynh (Mississauga/) netted a goal 10 minutes in followed by
Kara Moro (Port Moody/) at the 31-minute mark to give the Warriors a 2-0 lead into the half.
The Huskies came out in the second scoring in the first minute from a marker by Brittany Avery. That was the only mistake made by a nearly perfect outing from Warrior goalie,
Bronwen Clayfield-Jewett (Waterloo/).
Waterloo's
Melissa Lewis (Waterloo/) and
Meghan Bester (Waterloo/) tallied a goal each in the 56 and 67
th minute respectively to close out the contest. Waterloo's steadfast goalie, Clayfield-Jewett was named their teams player of the game while SMU goalie Briana Holmes was their player of the game.
Before the semifinals get underway on Saturday, the Martletts and Huskies will face off in the morning for fifth place. Action begins at 10 a.m. at Varsity Field in Guelph.
