Late surge falls short as Warriors drop home game to Blues

Kelly MacLean celebrates her second goal of the game
Game Summary

The Waterloo Warriors dropped their second game in as many days falling to the Toronto Varsity Blues 3-2 on Sunday afternoon at the CIF arena.  Waterloo found themselves down 3-0 in the third period before a late surge would bring the Warriors to within one but time would run out on their comeback effort.

With the loss Waterloo dropped to 1-3-0 on the season while the Blues improved to 2-1-0.

After a scoreless first period, second-year forward Amanda Ricker of Kanata, Ont., got the visiting Blues on the board with a powerplay goal 5:47 into the second frame.

The Blues went ahead by two less than six minutes later with an even strength marker off the stick of rookie forward Courtney Tougas (Thunder Bay, Ont.), her third goal of the season.

Fifth-year veteran and Scarborough, Ont., native Amanda Fawns would extend Toronto's lead to three with another powerplay goal with just over one minute remaining in the second period.

Things were looking good until the Blues found themselves in penalty trouble in the final three minutes.  With two Toronto players in the box, Waterloo forward Kelly MacLean (St. George/) found a hole past Blues goaltender Nicole Kesteris to spoil the shut out.

It wouldn't stop there.  MacLean notched her second goal of the game 45 seconds later to quickly bring the game within one.  Toronto would hold off the late surge for the remaining 19 seconds to earn their second consecutive win and hand Waterloo their third loss of the season.

Kesteris made 21 saves in the win while Rebecca Bouwhuis (Orillia/) allowed three goals on 20 shots to with Martina Michaud (Etobicoke/) stopping all six shots faced in relief.

Waterloo returns to the ice on Friday, October 21 as they host the undefeated Laurier Golden Hawks (2-0-0).  Puck drop is set for 7:30pm at the CIF arena.
