Men's basketball gives up 114 points in loss to Hawks

By: Martin Timmerman

The Waterloo Warriors had not given up more than 100 points in an OUA league game in almost 10 years. But an opening first quarter of 39 points provided Wilfrid Laurier with the start to a 114-82 victory over the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday afternoon.

The Warriors have been slow out of the gate this season, and despite scoring the game's first four points they found themselves down by double digits after less than 4 minutes of play. The first quarter was all offense, as Laurier had a 39-24 lead after just 10 minutes.

The second quarter proved to be pretty even, but Waterloo could not narrow the gap much. Half time score was 61-47 for Laurier with Waterloo hitting 51.5% and Laurier shooting at a 49% clip, including 9 for 18 from the three point line.

Waterloo came out of the dressing room ready to make it a game. A 10-3 run capped by two long range hits by Cam McIntyre (Kitchener, Ont.) made the gap just 7 points. But the offense and defense quit together as Laurier went on a 24-5 run to close out the quarter and hold a commanding 90-64 lead after three periods. Both teams played their bench in the fourth as all 24 players had court time.

Laurier finished the game shooting 48%, including 16 baskets from the three point line. Leading scorer for Laurier was Patrick Donnelly with 32 points and 15 rebounds. Kale Harrison added 19 points, with Maxwell Allin adding 18. For Waterloo, Cam McIntyre (Kitchener/Kitchener C.I.) led the way with 25 points. Alan Goodhoofd (Oakville, Ont.) had 19 points and 10 rebounds.

With the loss Waterloo drops to 5-5 in OUA play. Next game is Wed Jan 12 as the Warriors travel to Guelph. Game time is 8:00pm.
