Warriors captain
Chris Ray (Kelowna, B.C.) scored at 7:51 of the third period to break a 2-2 tie in the third period as Waterloo went on to defeat the pesky UOIT Ridgebacks 3-2 on Friday evening at the CIF Arena.
Waterloo opened the scoring midway through the first period as the speedy Andy Smith (Rosetown, Sask.) came flying up the middle of the ice receiving a perfect pass from Tyler Moir (Calgary, Alta.) and Smith made no mistake firing the shot over the shoulder of Ridgebacks keeper Jason Guy (Whitby, Ont.). Ryan Molle (Calgary, Alta.) picked up the second assist on the goal.
The lead would be short lived as UOIT answered one minute later off the stick of Nathan Spaling (Drayton, Ont.). Spaling picked up a second rebound after Scott Baker (Mactier, Ont.) took a couple of whacks at the puck from a Matt Pasztor (Langton, Ont.) point shot.
The black and gold would take the lead back three minutes later on the power play with Moir picking up his second point of the game chipping a rebound past Guy. Ray and Kirt Hill (Winnipeg, Man.) showed nice passing as they gained the zone with Hill having a point blank chance that was spoiled by Guy but was unable to stop the loose Moir who gave Waterloo the 2-1 lead heading into the second.
Following a scoreless second frame, the Ridgebacks would once again show their fight as they evened the game at two with defenceman Mike Noyes (Lucan, Ont.) scoring his fifth goal of the season jumping up on the play and picking up a rebound from a Kevin George (Uxbridge, Ont.) shot. The George shot hit Warrior goalie Keaton Hartigan (Kitchener/) in the mask and he was unable to recuperate for the Noyes rebound shot.
The Warriors would score the winning goal six minutes later as Ray would tip a pass from Kyle Schwende (Kitchener, Ont.) on his backhand which would stand as the eventual game winning goal.
Keaton Hartigan (Kitchener/) made 29 stops in the win while Jason Guy stopped 26 of 29 shots in the loss.
The Warriors go to battle once again tonight with cross-town rival Laurier Golden Hawks visiting the CIF arena for a 7:30 pm game.
