Saturday, Sept. 25 vs. McGill

Women – Waterloo 5, McGill 2

The women Warriors came up against McGill University  on home courts and earned a well-deserved victory beating the Martlets 5-2. Although the day started with the loss of the doubles point, the team settled down to play some of their best tennis thus far. Led by Paige Long (Claremont/), the captain who playing at #2 scored the first point for Waterloo with a 6-3, 6-2 win. Courtney Winter (Toronto/) at 4 played a solid game to notch another win. She was followed by a determined performance from (Mississauga/) 1Alison Drainie (Toronto/) who at 2-5 down in the first set fought back to win the set  7-5 and then the second set 6-4. With three wins on the score sheet and needing one more to win the tie, #6 Lindsay Munch (Collingwood/) came through with an efficient demolition of her opponent 6-0, 6-1.  The icing on the cake as well as the comeback story of the day was provided by #5 Sandra Dinca (Richmond Hill/) who was a set down and with her opponent serving for the match at 5-3, then played some inspired tennis to win that set 7-5. Bolstered by this, she went on to win the third set super tie-break 10-4. Brittany Sinclair who suffered the only singles loss put up a creditable performance against a very tough opponent.

Men – McGill 5, Waterloo 2

The Warriors suffered a disappointing loss to McGill Redmen by a score of 5-2. The Warriors, still experimenting with their doubles teams lost the doubles point when they lost two of the three doubles matches.  In singles play No.1 Vincent Chan (Markham/) playing his first match as a Warrior on Saturday had no trouble disposing of his opponent 6-2, 6-2. Nachiket Yardi (Mississauga/) at # 4 won 6-3, 6-4. He, along with his partner, Kevin Lam (Markham/) had featured in the only win in the doubles. Lam lost in three sets in his singles match. Peter Szpahowski and Ayaz Awadia (Cambridge/)  both had to dust the cobweb off their games, especially the latter as this was his first match in two years due to a shoulder injury.
