Warriors edged by no. 9 Gaels, cruise past RMC

Friday, November 5 vs. Queen's (Home opener)
Queen's 3, Waterloo 2
(25-17, 25-20, 18-25, 22-25, 15-4)

The Warriors lost a thrilling five set match to the Queen's Gaels on Friday evening at the Physical Activities Complex in their home opener.  The no. 9 Queen's Gaels survived the scare from Waterloo who gave them everything they had but ultimately fell in the fifth and final set 15-4.

Set scores were: 25-17, 25-20, 18-25, 22-25, 15-4

After the Gaels easily controlled play in the opening two sets, the team's passing game slipped in the third and fourth sets allowing Waterloo back into the match.

Joren Zeeman (Cambridge, Ont.) led the Gaels with 19 kills and three service aces on the night while Bryan Fautley of Oakville, Ont., also had three aces to go along with 14 kills.

Alex Oneid (Ottawa, Ont.) led the Gaels defence with 10 digs in the match while setter Jackson Dakin (Courtenay, B.C.) had 44 assists in the match.

Rookie middle Jordan Dyck (St. Catharines, Ont.) and second year outside hitter Aleks Poldma (Toronto, Ont.) led the way for the Warriors with 10 kills each.  Setter Scott Thomson (St. Marys, Ont.) set up his hitters for 39 assists in the game.

Poldma and Dyck were critical in getting the Warriors back in the game after losing the first two sets.  The two power hitters gave Waterloo new found energy with monstrous hits and timely blocks at the net.

Unfortunately for Waterloo the wheels fell off in the final set and Queen's cruised to an easy fifth set victory to narrowly edge Waterloo three sets to two.

The Warriors (1-4) look for their second victory on Saturday night as they host the RMC Paladins at the PAC Gym.

Saturday, November 6 vs. RMC
Waterloo 3, RMC 0
(25-14, 25-12, 25-13)

The Warriors earned their second victory of the season on Saturday evening as they swept the RMC Paladins three sets to love (14, 12, 13) to move to 2-4 on the season.

The Warriors controlled the game from start to finish as they attempt to steer their season in the right direction.  The Warriors could very well be .500 on the season if it wasn't for two tough five set losses to powerhouses Queen's and McMaster and with the win, Waterloo hopes to carry their momentum forward.

Leading the way for the Warriors was rookie sensation outside hitter Fiodar Kazhamiaka (Waterloo, Ont.) who had 10 kills and seven digs in the match.  First year setter Kevin Wiseman (Lively, Ont.) had 18 assists in the match.

Waterloo hosts the Laurier Golden Hawks in their only game next weekend on Saturday, November 13 as part of Think Pink weekend at Waterloo.  Game time is set for noon.
