Warriors comeback falls short in 89-74 loss to Blues

Release by: Martin Timmerman

The Toronto Varsity Blues scored the first 12 points of the game on their way to a 39-8 lead over the Waterloo Warriors after 12 minutes of play. The Warriors would outscore the Blues in each of the last three quarters, but the gap was too much and the Blues won 89-74 on Friday night.

In the first quarter, nothing was dropping for the Warriors as open shots and layups were missed. Coach Tom Kieswetter was forced to call a time out while the fans were still clapping for a first basket. Toronto hit everything, and when they didn't they grabbed a rebound and had a put back. After one quarter it was 31-6 on the score sheet, and 21-8 difference on rebounds.

The Warriors recovered somewhat over the second quarter, reaching 24% shooting for the half, and narrowing the rebounding edge, but still watching the Blues hit 51% from the field and 7 of 13 from long range. The Blues entered the locker room at half time with a 51-27 lead.

In the second half, Waterloo pressured all over the court, forcing 15 second half turnovers. Waterloo also started hitting their shots, shooting 45% for the second half, but only a singleton from long range. Waterloo did manage to get the difference down to 12 points with seven minutes remaining. A long three by Alex Hill stopped the run and the teams traded baskets the rest of the way.

For Toronto, now 6-1 in OUA play, the inside pair of Drazen Glisic and Andrew Wasik had double-double efforts. Each had 19 points, with Wasik grabbing 16 rebounds to 15 for Glisic. The Blues also hit 10 of 26 from the three point line for the game.

For the Warriors, Cam McIntyre (Kitchener, Ont.) led the team with 14 points. Wayne Bridge (North York, Ont.) added 13 and Brendan Smith (Kamloops, B.C.) and Andrew Melbourne (Scarborough, Ont.) had 12 each.

The Warriors close out the fall portion of the schedule with a game on Saturday against the Ryerson Rams. Game time is 8:00pm at the PAC. For those unable to attend, the game will be broadcast on SSN Canada.
