Women's hockey shutout by Gaels

Kristin Smith of Toronto, had a goal and an assist as the Queen's Gaels opened their season with a 2-0 victory over the Waterloo Warriors.

After a scoreless opening frame, the Gaels took advantage of two Waterloo penalties to build their lead. Smith got the Gaels on the board 7:03 into the second period when she snapped a shot high over the shoulder of Warriors goaltender Martina Michaud (Etobicoke/) of Etobicoke, Ont.

Kelsey Thomson of Martintown, Ont., would capitalize on the second Warrior penalty later in the frame when she banged home a pass Smith in the slot.

From that point forward, Queen's goalie Mel Dodd-Moher of Stittsville, Ont., shut down the Warriors, including going post-to-post late in the third period to preserve her first shutout of the season. She would finish the game with 21 saves.
