Warriors field hockey edged by Gaels

Jess Lawson fires the ball up field

After playing an exceptional game last weekend against Queen's in Ottawa, the Warriors would rather forget what transpired on Saturday in Guelph, where the 2010 CIS National Championships will be held.  The Warriors were handed their fourth loss of the season as the Gaels edged the Warriors 3-2.

Despite starting the game well and going ahead at the fourth minute mark on a goal by Kara Moro  [(Port Moody, BC) her sixth of the season] the team was stifled for the rest of the first half by some decent saves by the Queen's goalkeeper and two struck posts. Eager to put the game away, the Warriors were caught out at times but kept the score 1-0.

Queen's would tie the game up in the 43rd minute on a penalty corner and would take the lead five minutes later. This seemed to wake the Warriors up and after some good penetrating runs by Jess Lawson (Puslinch, Ont.) and Kara Moro (Port Moody/), the score was 2-2 when Kara set up Jaimie Wey (Kitchener, Ont.) for her fourth of the year to tie the game at 2. Determined to get the full three points and win, players stepped up too much and were caught out by a Gaels counter-attack.  The Gaels would add a late goal to take the win 3-2.

The Warriors hope to rebound in their next action as they host games at St. David's Catholic High school on Saturday, October 9.  Come out and support your Warriors as they battle the York Lions at 10:00 am followed by the Guelph Gryphons at 3:00 pm.

Weekend Goals: Kara Moro (Port Moody/) (1), Jaimie Wey (Kitchener/) (1)
