The York Lions claimed its first victory of the season on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 17), winning a 1-0 nail-biter against the Waterloo Warriors at the CIF Arena in Waterloo.

In what was a defensive showdown between two high energy squads, the Lions (1-3-0) were led by sharp play from their rookie goaltender Jessayln Bogacki (Thunder Bay, Ont.) who stopped 30 shots en route to her first win of the season as a starting netminder. It was her second strong performance in a row as she was also strong in a loss to Laurier on Saturday in making 42 saves.

Waterloo goaltender Martina Michaud (Etobicoke, Ont) continued to impress as she continues to keep her Warriors in every game. Her 27 saves in the game were overshadowed by multiple Warrior penalties, including four in the first period alone.|

Whereas the Warriors (0-4-0) found it difficult to escape the ire of the refs, the Lions kept their eyes and focus on the puck and were rewarded with the game's lone goal coming courtesy of team captain Courtney Unruh (Fort St. John, B.C.) at the 17:03 mark of the second period. The goal came while the Lions were shorthanded as defender Jamie Endrizzi (Toronto) was serving a holding penalty.

Unruh's heroics, combined with excellent play along the blue line and in net proved to be a winning combination for the Lions.

The Lions (3-1-0) earned their first victory of the season while Waterloo (0-4-0) are still in search of their's.  The Warriors will need to improve their offensive output if they are to turn the young season around.  Waterloo hosts a pair of games next weekend as Brock (2-1-0) and Guelph (3-0-0) pay a visit to the CIF Arena for Saturday and Sunday games.
