The battle of Waterloo football game highlights a busy weekend of Warrior home action this weekend.
The OUA field hockey season begins with Waterloo hosting the first weekend of action at Warrior Field. After losing seven starters in the off-season Waterloo will boast a young but talented squad this season. Team captain Melissa Lewis will look to guide the Warriors back to the CIS Championship for the first time since 2010.
Waterloo will battle the always competitive Guelph Gryphons in their opening match on Saturday at 9am before returning to Warrior Field for two more games on Sunday against McGill (11:15am) and Toronto (2:45pm).
Down at the CIF fields the women's rugby team, also with a large contingent of rookies on the roster, will look to even their record at .500 when the face Laurier at 12pm. The Warriors put forth a valiant effort against OUA powerhouse Guelph in their opening contest last weekend but ran out of steam and dropped the game 43-5.
Saturday night will be the highlight game as Waterloo football will look to even their record at 2-2 as they host the Laurier Golden Hawks in the battle of Waterloo under the lights (7pm kickoff).Â
Second year quarterback
Jamie Cook (Collingwood/) has looked impressive for the Warriors after
Brian Chris (Waterloo/) went down with an injury in week one. Cook has thrown for 589 yards with a respectable completion percentage of 62.0.Â
Receiver
Nick Anapolsky (Guelph /) has continued to be a dominant force in the OUA with 272 yards on 27 completions while running back
Danny Silvestri (Waterloo/) has had stellar start to his season with 228 rushing yards on only 34 carries, good for fourth best in the OUA. Silvestri also carries the load on both punt and kick returns and has given Waterloo quality field position in the opening three weeks.
The Warriors will be looking for their first battle of Waterloo victory since 2002 when they slipped past the Haws 18-16.Â
Men's rugby and baseball will close-out the busy Warrior weekend. The men's rugby squad play their home opener against Queen's at 1pm on the lower CIF fields while baseball look to continue their winning ways over Ryerson with a double-header set at Jack Couch Park (1pm/4pm).
Note: The football grandstand is expected to be sold out relatively early so please remember to bring lawn chairs for comfortable seating on the berm which costs only $5.
