The Waterloo Warriors badminton team collected their fourth straight medal in as many years as the black and gold walked away with a bronze medal at this year's championship tournament hosted by Ryerson.
Waterloo tallied a total of 40 points for third spot overall while the Toronto Varsity Blues and Western Mustangs tied for top spot with 59 points. The Blues were given the gold medal thanks to their 12 victories compared to Western's seven to earn the tiebreaker.
The top point getter for the Warriors was
Nathan Lee (Markham) who claimed silver medals in both men's singles and doubles and was named an OUA all-star in both events for his efforts.
Wesley Marr (Toronto) also put together a strong championship with a second place finish in men's doubles alongside Lee while finishing fourth overall in mixed doubles with partner
Surabhi Kadam (Woodbridge/). Kadam also captured a bronze medal in the women's singles event to earn a spot on the OUA all-star list.
The pairing of Jackie Yeung and Grace Gao won the mixed doubles event, the final competition of the day, to pull Toronto into the tiebreaker scenario by defeating the Western duo of Ross Golding and Alexandra Bruce, 16-21, 21-16, 21-18.
Toronto's Gao also won gold in women's doubles with partner Michelle Li, defeating Western's Bruce and Adrianna Giuffre (21-17, 21-15). Li took home the singles title after a victory over Toronto teammate Bethany So (21-17, 21-11).
In men's action, Western's Martin Giuffre defended his singles title, downing Waterloo standout
Nathan Lee in a thrilling three-set match (21-16, 18-21, 23-21). Giuffre and partner Golding also defended their doubles title, defeating Waterloo's partnership of Lee and
Wesley Marr (21-18, 22-24, 21-14).
Western's Martin Giuffre was named the 2012-13 male most valuable player while Toronto's Michelle Li and Grace Gao were jointly named the 2012-13 female most valuable players. Toronto's Gao also took home the female rookie of the year award while Varsity Blues teammate Jackie Yeung was named the male rookie of the year.
Toronto's head coach Wayne King was named the 2013 OUA Coach of the Year.
